Good streaks come to an end, even for the “new” Kyrgios, mellowed and focused. By dropping the third set and therefore being beaten in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Montreal by Hubert Hurkacz (7-6 [4]6-7 [5]6-1), the Australian ended his nine straight wins and did not qualify for what would have been his first Masters 1000 semi-final since Cincinnati in 2017.
This Friday, against the Pole, there was a bit of the air of the old Nick – without the behavioral excesses -, in this dilettante way of playing many points and this way of letting himself be unduly destabilized at the start of the third set, in ruminating with the referee, for a really long toilet break (seven minutes) from his opponent.
Too many dubious choices
At the start of the match, Kyrgios held his back, grimacing, as if to show that the game was going to be difficult. But he still managed to serve well, in accelerated sequences where he took ten seconds to play between his points on his commitments. The 27-year-old gave in in the first tie-break, notably committing his first double fault on a daring second ball.
In the second set, despite three consecutive break points missed at 1-0, then two more at 2-1, the Australian gave the change by being more invested and adjusting better in his strikes. He was rewarded by winning the second tie-break, helped by a let ball which bounced twice on the net, and by a few well-felt volleys. But, despite some nice slaps in the forehand, there were too many dubious choices, especially with an excess of amortizations, against a more rigorous Hubert Hurkacz (20 aces, six break points saved out of six to defend). Broken from the start of the third set, it was over for Kyrgios (eight double faults in total) who held on to his abs and knees…
