“It’s difficult to believe in the positive attitude of the Minister of Sports” – Kommersant FM

Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin said that 180 Russian athletes representing different sports could go to Paris next year. At the same time, the head of the National Olympic Committee Stanislav Pozdnyakov believes that a much smaller number of Russians will be able to take part in the Summer Games. For details, see Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov.

The world of Russian sports has recently been rocked by scandals. Either the head coach of the national football team, Valery Krapin, will urge the players to go abroad, or the skaters will be banned from performing to the Rammstein track.

And the discussion about whether Russian athletes should go to the Olympics without the flag and anthem or not, in general, one might say, has split society into two camps. And at such a moment the figure of 180 people suddenly appears, who seem to be able to take part in the 2024 Games.

Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin explained these data as follows: “This figure was presented based on the opportunities for our athletes to participate in qualifying competitions.

We understand that representatives of team sports will not be able to take part, including, let’s say, team disciplines in swimming, fencing and many others. This statistical analysis was done, and based on this we came to the figure of 180.”

It’s difficult to believe in Mr. Matytsin’s positivity, especially after the head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Poznyakov, immediately questioned the official’s words: “I think the minister knows what he’s talking about. But I have slightly different assumptions: I think that at the moment only a few representatives of sports will have such an opportunity.”

Stanislav Pozdnyakov is definitely aware of what is happening, as he is constantly in touch with IOC representatives, and so far there has been no news from that side that could please us.

In addition, not everyone in Russia wants athletes to go to France under the conditions that will most likely be announced to them.

A popular point of view, in particular, was voiced by two-time Olympic champion Dmitry Vasiliev: “We cannot accept the conditions that are once again being offered to us. Only then should we participate if Russia is returned without any additional conditions.

Otherwise, experiencing all these humiliations for the fifteenth time is simply not respecting yourself.”

It is worth saying that public discussion about going to the Olympics without a flag and anthem continues even after the head of state Vladimir Putin openly expressed his opinion on this topic:

“Of course, we must first of all be guided by the interests of the athletes in this situation. Some of them have been preparing for the most important competitions for years, decades. They have to make a certain decision for themselves.”

At the same time, the International Olympic Committee has not yet allowed Russians to participate in the Games in Paris and has not set a deadline for making such a decision. According to the current recommendations of the organization, athletes can be admitted to competitions in a neutral status and only as individual athletes.

But as we understand, this is not certain. Maybe, while everyone is in nervous anticipation, Russian sports officials, and not only others, should better weigh their words.
