Italian Prime Minister George Meloni announced the impossibility of supplying F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, while the country will consider participating in the training of Ukrainian pilots.
“We do not have F-16s, so we cannot participate in this project. But we are talking about the possible training of Ukrainian pilots. We have not yet made this decision and are discussing it with our allies,” the prime minister said at a press conference (quote according to TASS).
On May 19, US President Joe Biden told G7 leaders that the US would help train Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16. But, according to media reports, these trainings can only be carried out at European bases.
On May 17, it became known that the UK and the Netherlands would work to “create an international coalition to provide Ukraine with combat aviation capabilities, including training and purchasing F-16 aircraft.”
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
