Italy plans to recognize Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainians

The Italian authorities at the official level plan to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. The corresponding draft resolution should be considered in the country’s parliament.
This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during a joint briefing with Italian Prime Minister George Meloni.
According to Zelensky, such recognition is very important for Ukraine, since this year marks the 90th anniversary of the tragedy.
“Madam Prime Minister told me that the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament of the Republic already voted for this important decision yesterday, now we hope that the Italian Parliament will approve the relevant resolution in the near future,” Zelensky said.
It should be noted that, according to demographers, the number of Holodomor victims is from 3.5 to 5 million people, including directly excess mortality in the Ukrainian SSR is from 2.6 to 3.9 million people. In 2013, the M.V. Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine held an international scientific conference “Famine in Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century: causes and results (1921-1923, 1932-1933, 1946-1947)”, where estimates of demographic losses as a result of the famine of 1932-1933 were published: the excess number of deaths of the population of Ukraine amounted to 3 million 917.8 thousand people, Russia – 3 million 264.6 thousand people, Kazakhstan – 1 million 258.2 thousand people, in total throughout the entire territory of the USSR – 8 million 731.9 thousand people.
