On Thursday, a Rome military tribunal found Italian Navy officer Walter Biot guilty of spying for the Russian Federation and sentenced him to 30 years in prison, Ansa news agency reported.

The court session lasted about a year, a representative of the military prosecutor’s office demanded that Biot be sentenced to life imprisonment, but the tribunal decided on a lighter sentence. Biot was charged with obtaining classified information and photographing it for espionage purposes, as well as disclosing confidential information. According to the prosecutor’s office, Biot enjoyed maximum confidence in the service, which allowed him to have access to secret documents and commit crimes.

The lawyer for the Italian soldier said that Biot had no opportunity to defend himself and promised to continue fighting for the honor of his client.
