Italy is ready to discuss the issue of resolving the situation in Ukraine only on the basis of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s ten points, the country’s Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani told La Stampa newspaper.
“Italy is ready to listen to any proposal that can end the conflict, but our position (the same as Europe and NATO) is clear: we support Zelensky’s 10 points of peace proposal. No one can imagine a solution that Kyiv does not share. Otherwise, we would not be talking about peace, but about the defeat of Ukraine,”— said Tayani (quote from Kommersant).
This week, Zelensky met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister George Meloni as part of a trip to Rome. The Ukrainian President also talked with Pope Francis.
In December last year, Meloni announced Italy’s readiness to act as a guarantor of a peace agreement on Ukraine. The prime minister also called for “concrete” work on a peaceful settlement of the situation and added that interest in this is needed from both sides. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation refused consider Italy as the guarantor of a peaceful settlement.
In early November, Zelensky, speaking at the G20 summit, listed 10 conditions of the “Ukrainian peace formula”, among which are the restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory, fixing the end of the conflict, as well as ensuring food, energy and nuclear security.
