It was proposed to increase recess for overloaded schoolchildren

Deputies and government officials became concerned about school timings. The big change, it turns out, is not that big, just 20 minutes. Parliamentarians propose increasing it to half an hour so that the growing body can absorb the “obligatory hot meals.” And in the Sverdlovsk region, authorities additionally discovered that sixth-graders have 8 lessons a day. And on Saturday there are 3 more lessons.

It turns out that modern children simply live at school, and do not relax at home, doing homework.

State Duma Deputy Vasily Vlasov proposes to increase the long break to half an hour. With this innovation, he approached the Minister of Education. They say that “millions of Russian schoolchildren” do not have time to eat “guaranteed free hot lunches” in 20 minutes. “In this regard, I ask you to consider the feasibility of making changes to regulations regarding the establishment of a minimum permissible lunch break for schoolchildren of at least 30 minutes,” the deputy writes.

The reaction of the head of the department is unknown. The parents almost unanimously decided that the news was “nothing.” Firstly, only primary school students (grades 1–4) receive hot lunches throughout the country; the teacher takes them to the canteen in an organized manner. And 20 minutes is just enough for children 7–9 years old to eat lunch and not kill each other during recess. Teenagers rarely eat in the canteen, preferring the nearby shawarma shops and tents. And vapes are like a new scourge of schools – just for the “extra” 10 minutes.

Secondly, classes will end even later. Which is not good for anyone – neither the teacher nor the parents. “The child returns home at six or seven o’clock anyway, it’s dark outside! And also do homework in the evening,” the mother of 14-year-old Vladimir from Moscow is indignant. Her child studies in a very ordinary school. He is interested in swimming and music, but he had to give up music lessons – it became impossible to combine it with regular activities. Yes, there are children with bright brains and responsibility who learn everything in class and then “on their knees,” solving their homework between clubs and sections. But such an “excellent norm” is only 10–15% in each class.

What then can we say about students at school during the second shift (according to statistics, there are 2.5 million of them in the Russian Federation), who return home closer to night. According to the requirements of Rosobrnadzor, you can study “in the second” only until 19:00, this is 6 lessons maximum. In practice, in some schools, children and teachers sit in classes until 8 or even 9 pm (7 or 8 lessons). Or the directorate is going to reduce lesson time from 40–45 minutes to half an hour. Or they transfer the lion’s share of “unfinished” hours to Saturday.

A scandal over a large number of lessons in the school schedule broke out in Nizhny Tagil. There, the parents of school No. 50 students filed a collective complaint that the children had 7-8 lessons and 3 more lessons on Saturdays. Deputy According to social policy, the local head of administration checked the complaint and made sure that it was so. “This is unacceptable, but such issues should be decided by school leaders,” the statesman responded, noting that “the children are not overloaded.” And he technically advised school administrators to designate subjects in one font, and different extracurricular activities: conferences, excursions, in another. Probably no one informed the Sverdlovsk deputy mayor that extracurricular activities were not included in the schedule.

“According to the Law “On Education,” schools have the right to set the schedule at their own discretion,” says lawyer Stanislav Popov. – At the discretion of the school administration and the start time of classes – from 8.00 to 9.30 am. This, one might say, is a legacy of the pandemic, and many found it convenient. Likewise, Saturdays are at the discretion of the school administration. Although Rosobrnadzor and the Ministry of Education recommend a five-day week. According to the law, only first-graders cannot study for 6 days. Yes, there are SanPiNs, which state that in grades 5-6 there cannot be more than six lessons, and in grades 7-11 – more than seven. But the decisions of the chief sanitary doctor are not the letter of the law at all.

“There are more compulsory hours at school,” says methodologist and teacher Antonina Gordeeva. — “Talking about important things” was introduced by a special regulatory act. Starting this year, a career guidance hour appeared on Thursdays or Fridays. There are proposals for some other new subjects – family studies, scientific research, additional hours of history and social studies. But not to the detriment of anything else, because by law the school is obliged to provide every child with a basic general education according to existing standards. So, into the load, from above.

Meanwhile, parental chats and portals are filled with advice on how to adapt and boost immunity in a child who works hard almost like an adult. What moms and dads don’t recommend to each other: honey, ginger, natural sorbents, or even coffee in the 5th grade…

“Yes, I sit with one tutor every day for two hours, on just one subject,” reacts a graduate student from Moscow, Daniil. — There is now a lot of homework and project assignments. And electronic to boot. But almost all sites developed for schools are terribly buggy with loss of results. And I repeat the test, which took 40 minutes to solve…”

The fact that a lesson (academic hour) at school should last 45 minutes was justified by the Czech education reformer Jan Amos Komensky. He came up with the division of the year into quarters, educational programs and much more back in the 17th century. The scientist proved that fatigue and a drop in mental activity in a person occurs at the 46th minute of training. This is what needs to be enshrined in the form of law. And not any dubious proposals from servants of the people.
