The Russian national football team was unable to beat the Kenyan team – the match, which took place in Turkey, ended in a draw (2:2). Valery Karpin’s team was losing 1:2 for a long time and was able to equalize only in the 89th minute of the match. Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov followed the development of events.
The match started roughly as the Russian fans expected. Already in the eighth minute, Alexander Sobolev scored the first goal for the Kenyans, and it seemed that everything would go on as usual. Still, the Kenyans are seriously inferior in level to the Russians. But it was not there.
The defenders whom we are accustomed to consider reliable – Dmitry Barinov and Georgy Dzhikia – began to make mistakes as if they had never played professional football. And now, by the 37th minute of the match, Kenya leads 2:1.
Moreover, all this did not invigorate the Russian team at all, and if the level of the opponent was more serious, the score could have been higher. It is clear that playing in Turkey in an almost empty stadium with the epic name “Titanic” is difficult, although the few fans tried their best to prevent ours from drowning, and chanted “Russia! Russia!” were heard.
But apparently this was not enough. Only in the end, when people who really wanted to play came onto the field, did the Russian team finally equalize the score – the army player Ivan Oblyakov distinguished himself.
But despite this ending, the match left a mixed impression. On the one hand, the meeting was saved. On the other hand, the game evoked melancholy, and it was difficult to watch it all.
The players themselves explained their failures by the poor quality of the field in Turkey. The author of the saving ball, Ivan Oblyakov, also spoke about this: “We made mistakes in simple passes, so we got dangerous attacks. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to win, but everyone fought and tried.”
Perhaps everyone really tried, but it was difficult to notice. That’s why there is a lot of criticism towards the team now. The mildest epithet that experts used after the match was “inexpressive play.” But harsher words also sounded. Coach Alexander Grigoryan spoke about the team’s football performance as follows: “I would say that based on the results of this match, we did not play at all.”
The head coach of the national team, Valery Karpin, in turn, assured journalists and fans that he had drawn the necessary conclusions from everything that happened: “There is information about who is capable of what, so to speak, in the current state. There are a lot of players who played the first game with Cameroon and the second with Kenya. The second match probably gave the answer to the question of why the national team was made up this way.”
But it’s hard to say whether the national team players made the necessary conclusions. They certainly didn’t look upset after the final whistle. And this is sad, Igor Shalimov is sure, who himself has taken to the field more than once wearing the national team’s T-shirt: “It will be sad if the guys feel comfortable this evening. That is, it seems to me that after such games you should feel bad.”
The Russian national football team is scheduled to play its next matches in mid-November. It is still unclear who we will play with. The RFU only says that they are conducting some negotiations. But no matter who the officials agree with, I really want us to never see football of the same level as against Kenya from Karpin’s team.
