It turned out which languages Russian relocators prefer to study: six favorites are named

In recent months, the desire of Russians to learn languages that were not in demand among them has increased. This is connected, of course, with relocation to other countries – for temporary or permanent residence. There are six languages in the ranking of the most popular now – Hebrew, Georgian, Serbian, Chinese, Turkish and Armenian. This was reported by language courses and schools. “MK” learned the peculiarities of learning several top languages and found out who is studying them and why.

In the Moscow network of language schools, we have confirmed an increase in the number of applications for studying the Turkish language by more than 50%, and Chinese – by 25%.

– Previously, Turkish was not in great demand, but now it is catching up with English in demand, – said Svyatoslav Valyuh, development director of one of the language schools. – In addition, the study of the Chinese language is now noticeably gaining momentum, since due to political changes, close cooperation between Russia and China is planned, and many people who are thinking about the future both for themselves and for their children begin to learn this language – and adults and teenagers.

If we talk about the basic languages, then the demand for English has also grown: the number of requests has increased by 15-20%. This is due to the fact that most of the foreign companies that worked here are now offering relocation abroad to many of their employees, and English, as you know, is the international language.

Evgenia Larionova, founder of the online school of the Turkish language, Turkologist, candidate of philological sciences, confirmed to MK that the demand for Turkish has doubled this year. The vast majority of listeners are Russian-speaking citizens who study Turkish online from Russia and are already in Turkey. Most of the students are from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Many are from the Russian-speaking diaspora in Antalya and Istanbul, which has expanded significantly in recent months.

“A noticeable increase in demand began even during the pandemic period, as people had more free time, and those who were somehow connected with Turkey, for example, had real estate or went on summer holidays, began to actively learn the language,” said Larionova. – And since February, after the start of all the events, the number of people wishing to learn Turkish has increased even more. People feel the need to communicate with the local population, they are ready to study not only for three months, but also take longer-term programs.

– Is Turkish difficult for Russians?

“It’s a backwards language. Of course, it does not look like languages from the Indo-European family, that is, it is a little unusual for us, since it is a Turkic group. But I can say that learning Turkish is very useful for brain development: the thought here is built back to front, and this allows you to build new neural connections. We can say that it is useful for “pumping the brain.”

We look on the Internet to find out why now learn to speak Turkish? There are, for example, individual lessons via Skype “with Turkologists on a personal schedule” for 2000-5000 rubles. in hour. An online Turkish course in three months from scratch will cost 21,000 rubles. And there is also a “micro-course” for those who need only communicate with Turkish waiters: “how to ask for a drink” – 690 rubles. during the week.

Serbia is another popular location for Russians. Muscovites Katya and Ilya plan to move to Serbia in January, and they shared their story of mastering the Serbian language.

“My husband and I are going to Serbia because he was offered a job there by his IT company,” Ekaterina told MK. – The company is Russian, they just opened a branch there. When my husband was offered to move there, we agreed because we decided to get some new experience of living in another country. Moreover, in connection with the current situation, many Russians have moved there. Many of our close friends have already moved to Serbia, where a rather large Russian “community” has formed. We’re going to stay there for a year for now, and then we’ll see.

Our plans are to learn Serbian in order to communicate with the locals. My husband doesn’t have time for that yet, so I’m studying Serbian alone, at home. It turned out that there are no convenient applications for learning English, German and other basic languages for Serbian. But there are free courses on YouTube where Serbs who speak Russian, or Russians who have lived in Serbia for a long time, give lessons. I started with this. I open the video, take out a notebook, write down the words… In principle, the Serbian language is not that difficult, it resembles Russian, there are many similar words. But I think that it will be more convenient to learn the language already on the spot, in Serbia, when we move there. The wives of our friends who settled there said that they studied the language there with local tutors; also in Serbia there are many language courses, including official ones from the university, which go to those who want to get a residence permit.
