WHO: a case of human infection with equine encephalitis has been identified in Argentina
The World Health Organization website reported that a case of human infection with Western equine encephalitis has been identified in Argentina.
According to the National Coordination Center for Health Regulations in Argentina, this is the first case in almost three decades. Encephalitis was previously identified in Argentina in 1982/1983, when there was an outbreak of the disease among horses.
WHO experts clarified that the patient is an adult man from the province of Sante Fe. He is a farm worker from an area where horses have tested positive for the infection.
“The patient was provided with all necessary medical care. He spent several weeks in the hospital and was connected to a ventilator. He was discharged on December 20 and is currently under outpatient observation,” the WHO noted.
