Central Bank: bank fraudsters stole almost 16 billion rubles from Russians in a year

Fraudsters stole 15.8 billion rubles from bank clients in Russia in 2023, which is 11.5% higher than the 2022 figure of 14.2 billion rubles. Such data was presented by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on Tuesday, February 13.

The regulator clarified that the increase in the amount of stolen funds occurred against the background of an increase in the volume of money transfers using cards. At the same time, the share of transactions performed without the consent of clients has increased.

The deceived Russians managed to return 1.4 billion rubles. For comparison: in 2022 the figure was only 618.4 million rubles.

Earlier it was reported that in Nizhnevartovsk a local resident believed the callers and lost 900 thousand rubles. The 51-year-old man believed the man who over the phone identified himself as a bank security officer and offered to transfer his savings to a secure account.

Meanwhile, attackers continue to use fraud scheme with supposedly expired SIM cards. To extend its validity, according to legend, you need to read the code from the SMS message. However, as a result, criminals gain access to the data of the SIM card owner.
