Netanyahu: Israeli government launches legal reform
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government is taking steps to implement legal reform. Earlier this year, thousands of protesters took place in the country because of the intentions of the authorities.
“We will take these steps responsibly and gradually, – assured the head of the Israeli Cabinet. – In full accordance with the mandate that we received from the voters to reform.”
At the weekly government meeting, he said the coalition intends to start approving laws as part of the legal reform, as the opposition left the talks.
The project currently assumes, in particular, that the Israeli government will be able to control key appointments to positions in the country’s judicial system. Also, the reform will enable the Knesset to overrule the decisions of the Supreme Court by a majority vote, limit the ability of the court to give a legal assessment of bills and actions of the executive branch. These moments caused dissatisfaction of the opposition forces in the country.
Amid mass protests against the reform, Netanyahu promised in late March to hold talks with the opposition, which have stalled so far.
