Israeli Ambassador to Russia said Abbas does not control the Gaza Strip

Israel cannot negotiate with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas because he does not control the Gaza Strip, said Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi.

“Abbas, who will soon arrive in Moscow, in theory, has no control over Gaza. That is, I will negotiate with him, and then what? We need whoever comes to the negotiating table to be able to deliver on what they promise,” he said (quote according to TASS).

On November 9, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov announced the postponement of Abbas’s visit to Russia. Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Bogdanov clarified that Abbas’s visit will take place after the Palestinian side determines a convenient time.

The visit of the Palestinian leader to Russia was announced even before the escalation of the conflict between the Palestinian group Hamas and Israel. On November 2, Peskov said that a visit by the Palestinian President was on the agenda, but it was difficult to talk about an exact date. On October 26, Hamas representatives arrived on a visit to Moscow. Later, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that during the visit the release of foreigners from the group’s captivity was discussed, as well as issues related to ensuring the evacuation of Russian and other foreign citizens from the territory of the Palestinian enclave.

November 13 from Gaza left about 100 Russians; before that, a plane with 70 evacuated Russians on board took off for Moscow from Egypt.

On October 7, Israel began bombing the Gaza Strip. This happened after the Palestinian group Hamas attacked the southern regions of the country. During the Israeli attack, about 1,400 people were killed, and more than 200 were taken hostage by militants. The Palestinian side said that Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip killed more than 11,000 people. The number of wounded exceeds 27,000 people.
