Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Islam Makhachev defeated Alexander Volkanovski from Australia at the UFC 294 tournament in Abu Dhabi. The fight ended with a knockout in the first round.
The 31-year-old Russian defended his UFC lightweight title for the second time. Makhachev already met with Volkanovski in February, then he won by unanimous decision. The Australian replaced Charles Oliveira from Brazil in the fight, who withdrew from the fight due to a cut.
Makhachev now has 25 wins and 1 loss. The 35-year-old Volkanovski has 26 wins and 3 losses.
In another fight of the tournament, Chechen native Khamzat Chimaev, representing the UAE, defeated Kamaru Usman from the USA by split decision. The 29-year-old Chimaev now has 13 wins and no losses. He fought for the first time for the UAE, having previously competed under the flag of Sweden.
