The dismantling of two monuments to the repressed Poles and Lithuanians on the territory of the Memorial to the Victims of Political Repressions in Pivovarikha “is of a temporary nature.” So they answered the request of “Kommersant” in the press service of the government of the Irkutsk region.

The head of the service for the protection of cultural heritage sites of the Angara region, Vitaly Sokolov, clarified that the dismantling of the monuments, which were “previously installed without appropriate approvals,” was carried out to improve the area around the monument in the form of a cube-cell. It was installed last year at the initiative of the Society of the Rehabilitated of the Irkutsk Region, but because of the cold snap, they did not have time to “put the adjacent territory in order.” Now, in the course of landscaping, a site for visitors will be arranged next to the monument, three paths will lead to it.

According to the head of the Center for the Preservation of the Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Irkutsk Region, Grigory Ivlev, during the improvement, those monuments that were located at the site of the work were temporarily dismantled. They were put into storage. “I want to note that the names of those shot in the Irkutsk region, including Lithuanians and Poles, are inscribed on the Walls of Memory, which were installed on the territory of the Memorial to Victims of Political Repressions in 2021. The memory of them has been preserved,” Mr. Sokolov added.

The monument to the repressed Poles was erected by order of the Polish Consulate in Irkutsk in 2015. At the same time, a Lithuanian cross appeared, it was mounted with the support of the Lithuanian national and cultural center of the Angara region “Shvyturys”, the Irkutsk Regional Society of Victims of Political Repressions and the administration of the Ushakovsky Ministry of Defense.

The burial place of the executed victims of political repressions in Pivovarikha was discovered in 1989. It is the largest in the region and has 15-17 thousand graves. There are three moats and a fraternal reburial on the territory of the complex. Also here is the Wall of Sorrow with tablets on which the names of the victims of the Great Terror are written. In 2021, as part of the reconstruction of the memorial, all the known names of those executed in the region were put on the Walls of Memory, the list was formed for more than a year.

Recall that earlier in the Perm Territory a memorial was demolished in memory of Lithuanians and Poles sent into exile for logging during the Soviet political repressions. The monument appeared at the cemetery of the abandoned special settlement Galyashor seven years ago and was not official. Who exactly demolished the monument is still unknown.
