Iranian athlete Elnaz Rekabi will not be penalized for performing without a hijab at the Asian Climbing Championships. The head of the National Olympic Committee of Iran, Mahmoud Khosravi Vafa, according to the Associated Press, supported the athlete.

“It’s a small issue, I’m surprised it’s being talked about so much,” he said. “She should continue down that path to qualify for the Paris Olympics.”

On Sunday, Rekabi competed in the Asian Championships in Seoul and placed fourth in the all-around. Before the ascent, the athlete collected her hair in a ponytail, while Iranian women are required to wear a headscarf in public places that covers their hair, neck and shoulders. The rock climber said that she forgot to wear a hijab, as she was suddenly called to perform: she had to rush to put on shoes and adjust her ammunition.
