Iran’s entry into the BRICS and SCO will help the republic in the fight against Western sanctions. This was stated by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
“Our membership in the BRICS global alliance and joining the regional Shanghai Cooperation Organization can definitely play a role in the fight against US sanctions,” he said (quote according to TASS).
Raisi added that Iran’s economic potential would also strengthen the position of both communities in the world. He promised to make Iran’s membership in the BRICS and SCO “very effective”, from which both the member countries of the organizations and the republic itself can benefit.
In the BRICS, Iran, along with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia, was invited to the 15th summit of the association on August 24. Full membership of new countries in the organization will begin on January 1, 2024. Earlier it was reported that 23 states had applied to join the BRICS.
Putin congratulated new members of the association, noting that the BRICS countries will continue to work to expand the influence of the association in the world. The Russian leader emphasized that BRICS does not compete with anyone and does not seek to oppose itself to anyone. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov notedthat the countries of the association simply want to be “not prevented from developing projects that are mutually beneficial, not directed against anyone.”
French President Emmanuel Macron declaredthat the expansion of the BRICS testifies to the desire to build a world order that is alternative to the “Western” one. He added that the situation in the international arena threatens to weaken the positions of the West and, in particular, Europe.
