Iranian embassy opens work in Saudi Arabia for the first time in seven years

Iran’s embassy has reopened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, seven years after diplomatic ties between the countries were suspended. About it informed Al Arabiya TV channel.
The opening ceremony of the embassy in the capital of Saudi Arabia was accompanied by the raising of the Iranian flag to the sounds of the national anthem of the republic, the channel reports.
The event itself was attended by representatives of the Foreign Ministries of Iran and Saudi Arabia, in particular, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Iran, Alireza Enayati, who previously served as Assistant Foreign Minister of Iran.
Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 following Tehran’s harsh statements and attacks on the Saudi embassy in Iran following the execution in Riyadh of prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
In addition, both sides were involved in the civil war in Yemen, where the Iranian side supported the Houthi rebels (in the north of the country), and the Saudi side, at the head of the Arab coalition, supported President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi (in the south).
China contributed to the restoration of relations between the Arab countries. In March, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed, through the mediation of China, to restore diplomatic relations. According to the agreements, the countries were to open embassies in each other’s capitals. The document noted that the decision to restore diplomatic relations was made thanks to the “noble initiative” of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
