Iran supports Saudi Arabia’s peace initiative on Ukraine

Iran supports the initiative of Saudi Arabia for a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine. This was stated by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani Chafi.
“We welcome any actions and initiatives that will help achieve a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis,” he said (quote by Fars).
On July 29, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported on Saudi Arabia’s plans to hold peace talks on Ukraine without Russia’s participation. According to the publication, the meeting will be held from 5 to 6 August in Jeddah. It will be attended by the UK, the EU, Poland and South Africa. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is also expected to arrive.
On July 30, adviser to the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Yevhen Mykytenko, on the air of the Al Arabiya TV channel, expressed confidence that China would also join the initiative.
The first meeting in this format took place on June 24-25 in Copenhagen, also without the participation of Russia. Then, in addition to Western countries, some BRICS members took part in it: Brazil, South Africa, India and China. According to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak, the meeting once again discussed the details of the “peace formula” described by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
July 28, Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat Russia remains open to negotiations. According to him, Kyiv maintains an “irreconcilable position”. Peskov added that Ukraine is now “in a rather difficult situation”, but still rejects the possibility of dialogue.
