The UN Economic and Social Council has decided to exclude Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women until 2026.
The vote to exclude Iran was initiated by the United States. 29 countries supported this decision, 8, including Russia, opposed, 16 abstained.
Protests are taking place in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini, detained by the Iranian morality police. She was detained in Tehran for wearing the wrong hijab. On September 16, she died of a heart attack after four days in a coma. The country’s police explained the death of the Iranian woman as an “accident”, but the media claimed that she was tortured.
