Iran delays sending envoy to Sweden over Quran burning

Iran will not yet send its ambassador to Sweden to protest against the burning of the Koran near a mosque in Stockholm, transmits Reuters, citing a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahyan.
On June 28, an immigrant from Iraq tore up and burned a Koran near the central mosque in Stockholm. The demonstration took place on the day of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays for Muslims. The action was coordinated with the Metropolitan Police.
“While the administrative procedures for appointing a new ambassador to Sweden have been completed, the process of sending them has been delayed due to the Swedish government’s permission to desecrate the Holy Quran,” the minister tweeted. He did not specify how long Tehran intends to refrain from sending an ambassador.
On June 28, an immigrant from Iraq, Salvan Momika, held an action with the burning of the Koran on Medborjarplatsen square in the center of Stockholm. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson considered the permission for this action legal but inappropriate. According to Reuters, the Swedish police rejected several applications for demonstrations against the Koran, but the courts overturned these decisions, citing a violation of freedom of speech.
On June 29, the UAE Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish Ambassador, Lieselotte Anderson, to strongly protest her and condemn the demonstration. In addition, the Swedish Ambassador was summoned to the Jordanian Foreign Ministry. On the same day, protests were held in Baghdad (the capital of Iraq) over the burning of the Koran in Sweden. The demonstrators broke into the territory of the Swedish embassy. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry demanded that the Swedish authorities extradite the organizer of the rally.
