The Ethics Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will check the members of this organization – President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev and two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva – for their involvement in the armed forces of the Russian Federation, IOC communications director Mark Adams said after the two-day meeting Executive Committee of the IOC, which was held in Lausanne. According to Mr. Adams, such actions will be taken in order to “avoid the use of different approaches in relation to athletes, officials from Russia and IOC members from this country.” The IOC Ethics Commission will check whether two of the conditions contained in the IOC recommendations are met – lack of active support for hostilities and contractual obligations with military structures. In this case, only the period after February 24, 2022 will be taken into account.
75-year-old Mr. Tarpishchev has been a member of the IOC since 1994 and is in the top ten in terms of length of service in this organization among current members. His term will end in 2028 upon reaching the age of 80. In 2024, the first eight-year term of office of the IOC member, 41-year-old Ms. Isinbayeva, expires.
Recall that on February 28, 2022, the IOC recommended that international sports federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine, and in March of this year, the IOC executive committee recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be allowed exclusively in a neutral status, and only those who have not publicly spoken out in support of the special operation in Ukraine and are not associated with the armed forces or national security agencies.
In addition to Elena Isinbayeva and Shamil Tarpishchev, the check will also be held against honorary members of the IOC Vitaly Smirnov and Alexander Popov. 88-year-old Mr. Smirnov was elected to the IOC in 1971 – earlier than any of the current members of this organization, and in 2016 became its honorary member. Popov, 51, a four-time Olympic swimming champion, was a member of the IOC from 2000 to 2016.
Answering a question about the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Mr. Adams stressed that at the moment the IOC cannot set a time frame for issuing a particular verdict. “We have not made a decision whether Russians and Belarusians will compete at the Paris Olympics,” said the IOC communications director.
