IOC: EP resolution on the selection of Russians for the 2024 Olympics is contrary to the mission of the Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), in response to the resolution of the European Parliament (EP) to condemn the committee for providing athletes from Russia with the opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, emphasized that there is still no decision on the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the qualifications of the 2024 Games.
The IOC said that “an initial concept study of conditions for participation is underway, no decision has been made.” At the same time, they noted that “the request of the European Parliament for the” multifaceted isolation “of all athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus” clearly contradicts this statement. The committee drew attention to the fact that the EP resolution is in clear contradiction not only with the unifying mission of Olympism, but also with the autonomy of sports organizations, which “is an integral part of the European sports model and a fundamental principle repeatedly recognized by EU institutions.”
The IOC also made a reference to the EP resolution of November 23, 2021, “which confirms that the EU should strive for the further development of European sport, respecting its specific nature and autonomy.”
In addition, the resolution clearly contradicts “the unifying mission of the Olympic Games of peacebuilding” as well as the Olympic Charter “repeatedly endorsed by the European Union and its Member States.”
Earlier in early February, UN experts called on the IOC to ensure that athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus are not discriminated against.
