The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has updated the rules for participation in water sports at the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris, according to the press service of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). In accordance with the new regulations, not only women, but also men are allowed to participate in group synchronized swimming competitions.
Subject to the changes made, at the Olympic Games the total number of athletes entered by each federation cannot exceed nine competitors, one of which is in the reserve. In groups of eight athletes, no more than two men can be entered.
“Water sports are universal, men have established themselves as excellent synchronized swimmers. I look forward to seeing this new change in synchronized swimming presented to the world in Paris,” said FINA President Hussein Al Musallam (quoted from site FINA).
Synchronized swimming competitions at the Olympic Games first appeared in 1984. Men have been allowed to compete in World Aquatics Championships since 2015, but previously the IOC did not allow men to take part in synchronized swimming competitions.
