IOC: 12 Russian athletes qualified for the Olympics

12 athletes from Russia and seven Belarusian athletes managed to qualify for participation in the 2024 Olympic Games. James MacLeod, Director of the Department of Relations with National Olympic Committees of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), spoke about this on Tuesday, March 19.

IOC experts suggest that another 36 Russians and 22 Belarusians will be able to qualify for the Olympics in Paris.

At the same time, the IOC banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris. The medals of Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be taken into account in the overall standings of the Olympic Games in Paris, and the award ceremony for them will be held to music without words. The decision on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the closing ceremony of the Olympics in Paris will be made later.

It is also known that the committee approved the transfers of Russian wrestler Alexander Komarov and swimmer Anastasia Kirpichnikova to other teams. They will compete at the Olympics in Paris for the national teams of Serbia and France, respectively.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to consider the proposal of his French colleague Emmanuel Macron a ceasefire for the duration of the Olympics. The Russian leader warned that “we will always, in any situation, proceed from the interests of the Russian Federation.”

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko, who oversees sports in the Cabinet of Ministers, spoke about the attitude towards Russian athletes in Canada and the USA. According to him, a respectful attitude has remained in hockey, despite the geopolitical situation.
