The design and method of making a pencil, which, having served its intended purpose, takes on a second life, was developed by an inventor from the capital. After it has been worn down to such an extent that it becomes impossible to use it, the pencil is inserted into the ground, and flowers grow from it.
The secret of the development is that at the tip of the pencil is a cylindrical capsule with seeds, such as lavender or lilac, and a nutrient. The capsule is made from a water-soluble material, such as gelatin, and as a nutrient, for example, the mineral vermiculite can be used. The pencil itself is a lead in several layers pasted over with paper. Pencils with seeds are made of wood, so for the sake of stability in the ground, their cap needs to be deepened quite a lot, and this negatively affects germination. A paper pencil, firstly, is lighter, so it does not need to be thrust into the ground too deeply, and secondly, it decomposes much faster than wood. The inventor proposes to make a paper “shirt” of a pencil from unnecessary newspapers: Thicker paper absorbs glue worse, and less dense paper is too good, so too much is required.
A separate part of the invention is an apparatus for making pencils. Its main elements are a conveyor belt, a pressure plate and a glue supply device. To make a pencil, a lead with a sheet of paper attached to it at one edge is placed on the tape at the edge of the pressure plate. When the device is turned on, the stylus scrolls between the tape and the plate, winding the paper around itself. The inventor claims that this design is much simpler and more convenient than paper pencil making devices used today.
Finally, the third know-how of the inventor is a nutrient in a seed cap. The author used vermiculite rich in minerals valuable for plants, but noted that any substance that swells under the influence of moisture can be used as a useful additive. Swelling, it quickly destroys the gelatinous shell, releasing the seeds. An experiment conducted by the author showed that pencils with vermiculite germinate 4 times more often than without it.
