According to The Wall Street Journal, Rob Ciesielski and Amanda Lopez used the program to get to know each other and communicate at a distance. A 43-year-old man from Washington studied Spanish, while a 38-year-old woman from the Philippines studied Chinese. Lopez soon began to excel in the foreign language, even appearing on leaderboards. By 2021, Ciesielski began following her and congratulating her on her outstanding achievements. It got to the point that Lopez searched and found a man on a social network.

They began exchanging messages and were soon video chatting up to 25 hours a week and watching movies remotely. Using their linguistic skills, they also began writing love poems to each other.

Rob Ciesielski insists this dating method will soon become standard as people try their luck in relationships “through every app there is.”

“On Uber Eats or somewhere else. It’s just inevitable that it’s going to happen,” Ciesielski adds.

He is not far from the truth. The language service is just one of several apps that are not intended for dating, but are used as such.

For example, some use another app where people can record their routes and count their steps as a way to meet a potential partner.

“I’ve always been so hesitant about online dating,” Courtney Hollingsworth, who met her boyfriend Peter Krzywosz through the app and still flirts with him not only in real life but also virtually, told The Wall Street Journal.

But this way of dating is not really this year’s trend. This practice has existed for many years. For example, Terry Russell, 55, of Las Vegas, and Mel Chiong, 48, met through the app thanks to a bakery review Russell posted in 2012. “I never thought it was a resource for finding love,” Russell told The New York Post.

Let us recall that Tinder, which had previously left Russia, collaborated with a linguistic application to teach people how to flirt correctly. The dating app has given 100,000 users a free month of subscription to the app, which offers lessons in 40 languages.

According to the ad, 76 percent of Tinder users have found similar partners in other countries. This was established by a special paid Passport feature launched in 2021. According to reports, in the US, the most user passports match accounts from Paris and Tokyo.

“In the first week alone, the number of matches made as a result of using this feature increased by 25 percent, so partnering with the linguistic service has helped our users easily start conversations in the application where translation is not required,” shares Tinder Vice President Udi Milo.
