The International Chess Federation (Federation Internationale des Echecs, FIDE) was founded in 1924 in Paris and is one of the oldest sports federations in the world. Currently it includes 199 national associations. In 1999, FIDE was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee and is now fighting for the inclusion of chess in the Olympic Games program. Every year the federation holds at least 100 chess tournaments for men, women and children. In 2018, the organization moved its headquarters from Athens to Lausanne in Switzerland.

The highest body is the General Assembly, which elects the president and other leaders every four years. FIDE’s budget consists of 80% income from competitions and membership fees, and 20% from sponsorship funds. In 2022, its income and expenses amounted to €12.84 million. In 2023, income is planned at €16.86 million, expenses – €15.09 million.
