Interfax: Russia will withdraw from the Council of Europe convention on criminal liability for corruption

The Russian government supported the draft law on the denunciation of the convention of the Council of Europe, which criminalizes corruption. This was reported by Interfax, citing a source familiar with the matter.
In 2007, Russia joined the Group of States against Corruption of the Council of Europe (GRECO). The countries included in this group should coordinate the work on revealing corruption. In order to join GRECO in 2006, Russia had to adopt a law “On Ratification of the Criminal Law Convention on Corruption”.
The denunciation of the convention on criminal liability for corruption in the text of the bill was motivated by the fact that Russia’s membership in GRECO was suspended. This happened because Russia withdrew from the Council of Europe.
On February 25, the Council of Europe suspended Russia’s membership in the organization due to the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. On March 16, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided on the final exclusion of Russia. In connection with the withdrawal from the Council of Europe on March 3, Russia stopped interacting with the organization regarding the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.
