Intentional data leakage has grown in Russian healthcare

The number of leaks of information about citizens from Russian medical institutions is decreasing, but the volume of “leaking” information is growing like an avalanche, reports “Kommersant” with reference to the data of the specialized company InfoWatch. And the saddest thing is that the proportion of deliberate leaks is increasing: they now make up 87.5% of all public health-related data that is in the public domain.
Experts note that both the part stolen by hackers during attacks and the deliberate “leaks” of patients’ personal information by employees of medical organizations are growing. Both are stimulated by the growing interest in such data from criminal and semi-criminal data consumers.
Experts in the field of digital security say that this disease can only be cured by the amount of fines – they will incentivize those responsible to carry out the necessary costs and activities.
This year, according to InfoWatch, the number of information leaks in the healthcare sector in Russia has decreased by 33%. That is, eight databases of medical organizations “leaked”. However, the volume of data that got “to the market” increased 775 times, amounting to 31 million records.
At the same time, following the results of a data leak from the Russian Gemotest, the company was fined 60 thousand rubles. (less than $ 1 thousand), while, for example, the American company EyeMed, which allowed this, undertook to pay a fine of $ 600 thousand for leaking information about 2 million customers (“Hemotest” lost 30 million records).
