FSB: Ukrainian military intelligence was preparing a terrorist attack in Russia using a “dirty bomb”

The FSB of the Russian Federation said that Ukrainian military intelligence planned to carry out a terrorist attack using a “dirty bomb” on Russian territory, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the intelligence service, these plans became known during the investigation of an attempted sabotage at the Severny airfield in the Ivanovo region. As part of this plan, the head of the Ukrainian GUR, Kirill Budanov, created a unit with light aircraft, which was supposed to supply sabotage and reconnaissance groups in Russia with weapons of destruction. In particular, a plan was being developed to deliver and plant so-called “dirty bombs”, equipped with delay timers, to simultaneously undermine and render unusable the area for human habitation.

The special services detained two Ukrainian pilots, who confessed. One of them said that the leadership of Ukrainian intelligence discussed the possibility of transferring small portable nuclear charges to Russia.

The second is that he was given the task of flying out for bombing in the Bryansk region, and he named the fuel and lubricants warehouse as the goal.

A “dirty bomb” is a container with radioactive isotopes and an explosive charge. When it is destroyed due to an explosion, the radioactive filling is sprayed by a shock wave, polluting a large area.

Last autumn, Moscow became aware that Kiev was preparing a provocation on its own territory related to the detonation of a “dirty bomb” or a low-yield nuclear weapon in order to accuse Russia of using weapons of mass destruction and launch a powerful campaign in the world aimed at undermining confidence to Moscow.

As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, Ukraine has the technology to create a “dirty bomb” from nuclear fuel components, and Russia knows where this can happen.

Sources said that the leadership of the Eastern GOK in the city of Zhovti Vody, Dnepropetrovsk region, and the Kyiv Institute for Nuclear Research were tasked with making a “dirty bomb” and these works were already at the stage of completion of its creation.

A letter was sent to the UN stating that if Kiev used a “dirty bomb”, Russia would consider it an act of nuclear terrorism.

The IAEA later said that they did not find signs of a “dirty bomb” being created in Ukraine. Rosenergoatom noted that this report does not stand up to scrutiny.
