14 settlements fall into the flood zone due to destruction at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station

The level of water rise due to the partial destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region ranged from 2 to 4 m, 14 settlements fall into the flood zone. About it informed Andrey Alekssenko, Chairman of the Government of the Region, with reference to the data of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

“The floodplain coastal areas of 14 settlements fall into the flood zone: Dnepryan, Korsunka, Krynki, Cossack Camps, Peschanovka, Alyoshki, Solontsy, Kardashinka, Kokhany, Malaya Kardashinka, Naked Pristan, Belogrudove, Staraya Zburyevka, Zabarino and the islands on the Dnieper,” – he wrote in his Telegram channel.

The total population in these settlements exceeds 22,000 people, the official said. Informing people has been organized on the ground, buses and places for temporary accommodation of people have already been prepared in case of evacuation of residents of coastal houses. At the same time, operational groups of rescuers were sent to Novaya Kakhovka, Holaya Pristan and Alyoshka.

The level of water rise below the HPP is from 2 to 4 m, which does not pose a threat to large settlements, Alekseenko added.

The head of the administration of the Novokakhovsk urban district, Vladimir Leontiev, informedthat the evacuation of residents of flooded houses in the area of ​​the Kakhovskaya HPP has already begun. He also clarified that the water level will gradually drop to the previous values ​​in 72 hours.

The shelling of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station began at about two in the morning. As a result, the upper part of the HPP was destroyed and an uncontrolled discharge of water began. At the same time, the administration of the Kherson region emphasized that the station was built in such a way that “water discharge is impossible at once, so the situation is not critical.” According to Leontiev, the destruction became possible as a result of successive shelling of the HPP by Ukraine.
