On April 25, Moscow will host a meeting of intelligence chiefs from four countries – Turkey, Russia, Iran and Syria. This will be the first meeting of the heads of defense and intelligence agencies this year. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that the purpose of the meeting is to resolve the Syrian problem through negotiations, as well as to ensure peace and stability in the region. A message about this is posted on the website of the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
According to Vedomosti, on April 10 it became known that the planned meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, Turkey and Syria had to be postponed due to the position of Damascus. The Syrian government is demanding the withdrawal of the Turkish army from Syrian territory before engaging in negotiations. In turn, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the foreign ministers of the four countries will meet in early May in Moscow – before the general parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for May 14 in Turkey.
The first meeting of the defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of Syria, Turkey and Russia took place in December 2022 in Moscow after the proposal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to restore diplomatic relations with Syria and meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
