Minusinsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory, took first place in the ranking of cities with the worst air quality in 2022, follows from the schedule of the Russian Ecological Platform in the annual report Infragreen, which I got acquainted with “RIA News”. The second and third places were taken by Abakan (Khakassia) and Veliky Novgorod (Novgorod region), respectively.
“In 2022, the level of pollution (in Minusinsk.— “b”) averaged 121 microkilograms of gaseous pollutant per cubic meter per day,” the agency cites an excerpt from the report. In Abakan, the air contained “an average of 73 microkilograms of gaseous pollutant per cubic meter per day” in 2022. In Veliky Novgorod – “54 microkilograms per cubic meter.” It is noted that air pollution is seasonal.
According to Russian legislation, air with a concentration of harmful substances up to 11 microkilograms per cubic meter is considered clean, RIA Novosti notes.
According to another rating, based on the index of Strelka KB experts (estimating air quality using a space satellite), the most polluted air in 2022 was in the Moscow agglomeration (TAQI index – 62.3), Yakutsk (52.4) and Novosibirsk ( 42.5). Rating lead Vedomosti.
Director of the Russian Ecological Platform Sergey Shakhmatov linked the differences in the ratings with the difference in methodologies. “The study from the Infragreen report relies on data from a ground-based network that estimates fine dust levels down to 2.5 micrometers. Strelka, on the other hand, proceeds from space monitoring of the content of five substances, from carbon monoxide to sulfur dioxide, ”— explained Mr Chess.
