French Minister for Environmental Transformation Christophe Beschu expressed concern that all indicators of water supply in the upcoming agricultural season are “at an alarming level.”
Due to the unprecedented drought in France in 2022, the situation was characterized from the very beginning by low groundwater levels. “There was less rain than usual in February,” the minister said in an interview with Le Journal du dimanche. February 2023 was the driest since 1959.
It is expected that widespread restrictions on water use may be introduced in the country from March. At the moment, restrictions have already been introduced in four departments. Another ten regions are under special supervision.
