During the first session of the G20 summit that opened in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used a sign with the inscription “Bharat” to identify his country.
Earlier, National Congress chief Jairam Ramesh had expressed the view that the country should be renamed as Bharat is an ancient name by which the country has been known for thousands of years and is found in ancient Sanskrit texts, and the name India, according to Ramesh, was given to the country by the British and is colonial.
India was referred to as “Bharat” in the materials for the G20 summit. The country’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar explained this by saying that Bharat is a name from Hindi, which is one of the two state languages.
