The Indian lander Vikram, which landed on the moon at the end of summer, successfully maneuvered to lift off an artificial earth satellite from the surface. As a result, he moved about 1.5 meters from the starting point. This was reported by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on the social network X (Twitter).
The organization said that Vikram successfully completed the jump as part of an experiment. On command, he activated the engines, took off about 40 centimeters, as intended, and landed 30-40 cm from the original place.
ISRO explained that the experiment validated satellite take-off technology that could be useful for India’s new lunar missions to return samples from the lunar surface.
The message from the space agency also included a video of the experiment, which was captured by a camera from the Vikram. The recording shows the surface of the satellite with a track after the Pragyan lunar rover. First, dust rises everywhere due to the operation of the engine, after which the module drops down again.
