India successfully tests RLV LEX reusable launch vehicle

The RLV LEX-02 reusable launch vehicle was successfully tested in India. The corresponding work was carried out by the Indian Space Research Organization (IRSO), according to a press release.

In particular, the launch vehicle demonstrated the capabilities of autonomous landing in non-standard conditions after a helicopter drop. The development had to perform complex maneuvers and correct deviations, and, as a result, land in a completely autonomous mode, the organization said.

The launch vehicle was first tested in April 2023. The second test took place on Friday, March 22, at 07:10 local time (4:40 Moscow time). The RLV-LEX series of shuttles is a prototype of a future reusable launch vehicle, which is used to test the landing of the vehicle.

To test the development, the device was dropped from a height of 4.5 kilometers and from a distance of four kilometers from the landing strip. ISRO said that the launch vehicle landed exactly on the landing strip, using a special parachute as a braking system.

“As part of this mission, the landing conditions of an RLV returning from space and moving at high speed were successfully recreated,” the organization said.

Earlier it became known that the re-launch of the Russian Soyuz-2.1a rocket with the Soyuz MS-25 manned spacecraft to the ISS scheduled for March 23.
