India decides to import tomatoes from Nepal as prices rise by 1400%

Reuters writes that wholesale prices for tomatoes in India have risen by 1400% over the past three months to 140 rupees, or $1.69, per kg, which is a record figure. Sitharaman said that the first batches of tomatoes from Nepal will arrive on Friday in the cities in northern India – Varanasi, Lucknow and Kanpur.
“Many steps have been taken to curb inflation. The group of ministers is taking timely steps to control the prices that hit the common people,” Sitharman said in parliament, her words leads Indian edition of PTI. Importing tomatoes from Nepal is one of the steps to curb inflation and meet demand. In early August, PTI, citing wholesalers, wrote that tomato prices could reach 300 rupees per kg.
Sitharman also said that tur dal (a type of pea) will be imported from Mozambique and urad dal (legume) will be imported from Myanmar. At the same time, the authorities purchased about 3,000 tons of onions.
On July 20, the Indian authorities decided to ban the export of 80% of rice (except for the Basmati variety) to curb domestic prices. India provided 40.5% of global rice exports in the 2022/23 agricultural year (begins in June), according to the US Department of Agriculture. It exports culture to 100 countries of the world. Against this background, world prices for rice by August 9 grew up to a maximum of almost 15 years. According to the Thailand Rice Exporters Association, Thai white rice, the benchmark for exporters in Asia, jumped to $648 per 1 ton on Wednesday, which is almost 50% more than in August last year.
