India arrests 2,169 men for underage marriages

Indian police conducted a raid in the northeastern state of Asam as part of the fight against child marriage.
According to NDTV, 2,169 men were arrested during the raid for marrying girls under the age of 18. In total, the police registered 4074 cases.
It is curious that some underage wives of those arrested with small children in their arms came out to protest against the arrest of their husbands.
One of the girls said that together with her husband they somehow made ends meet, and now she simply has no idea where to get money and how to feed a child.
It should be noted that a bill is currently being considered in the Indian Parliament, which will generally raise the age when women are allowed to marry from 18 to 21. India’s Minister for Women and Children’s Development Smriti Irani believes the initiative will enable girls to complete their education and achieve financial independence.
