The shelling of the Zaporizhzhya NPP by the Armed Forces of Ukraine may lead to a shutdown of the station, which threatens to disrupt the supply of electricity to the EU, told member of the main council of the regional administration Vladimir Rogov “RIA Novosti”.
“If the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is stopped due to constant shelling by Ukrainian militants, the energy balance in Ukraine will be disrupted, and as a result, this will affect the supply of electricity to the EU countries,” he said.
According to Rogov, in this case, Ukraine will turn from an exporting country into an importing country of electricity.
Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near the city of Energodar. Four days after the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, Russian troops took control of the station. Subsequently, Energodar and the nuclear power plant were repeatedly shelled by the Ukrainian military. The Russian authorities emphasize that they do not use the station for military purposes and do not place weapons on its territory.
At the same time, Kyiv accuses the Russian military of attacks on the ZNPP and demands that the facility be returned to Ukrainian control. The foreign ministers of the G7 countries made the same call in August.
Russia has repeatedly stressed that the ZNPP should remain under the control of the Russian military for security reasons. According to the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzi, their efforts manage to protect the station and prevent a nuclear catastrophe. Leaving the Zaporizhia NPP could turn into a provocation on the part of Kyiv, he believes.
The day before, Nebenzya said that he would welcome the permanent presence of IAEA experts at the ZNPP. Moscow hopes the mission will visit the station “as soon as possible,” he said.
