The Office of Rospotrebnadzor for the Sverdlovsk Region recorded seven cases of meningococcal infection among employees of the Ozon distribution center in Yekaterinburg. According to the press service of the department, a complex of sanitary and anti-epidemic measures was organized in the distribution center of the Koltsovsky logopark.
Rospotrebnadzor identified the boundaries of the outbreaks at the places of residence and work of infected employees, and also established contact persons. “Anti-epidemic and preventive measures have been taken, including increased disinfection of premises, a medical examination and laboratory examination of contacts have been organized,” the press service of the department commented. The center’s employees are now being vaccinated (60 people have already undergone the procedure), and prophylactic antibiotic therapy is also being carried out. Anti-epidemic measures are ongoing.
Representatives of the federal Rospotrebnadzor said that it is impossible to get infected through parcels. The agency explained that the meningococcal pathogen Neisseria meningitides is not persistent: “On surfaces made of cardboard, corrugated cardboard, plywood and other materials from which packaging boxes are made, the pathogen can only survive for a short time.” It is clarified that in the Ozon distribution center all surfaces that could have been in contact with sick people are being processed, and air is being disinfected. “For people who received parcels from Ozon distribution centers, there is no risk of contracting meningococcal infection,” Rospotrebnadzor reassured.
