In Yakutsk, on Monday, the farewell ceremony for the first president of Yakutia, Mikhail Nikolaev, ended. He died on August 4 at the age of 86, in connection with which a four-day mourning was declared in the republic from August 5.
The first part of the funeral ceremony took place on August 6 in Moscow, at the permanent representation of Yakutia under the President of the Russian Federation. At the memorial service, a telegram of condolences was read from President Vladimir Putin, who noted that Mr. Nikolaev “sincerely loved his native land, did a lot for its socio-economic development” and made a significant contribution to strengthening international peace and harmony in Russia.
The next day, farewell to Mikhail Nikolaev continued at the State Opera and Ballet Theater in Yakutsk. “There are no words that can describe everything that Mikhail Efimovich did for Yakutia,” said the head of the republic, Aisen Nikolaev. “He always skillfully combined integrity, strength, unbending will and exceptional humanity, love for people.” For every Yakutian, Mikhail Nikolaev was “his own, dear, first, great, ours,” he added.
Chairman of the Il Tumen (parliament) of Yakutia Alexei Yeremeev emphasized that Mikhail Nikolaev is rightfully considered the founder of the new republic: “From the very beginning, he repeated: Yakutia is part of great Russia, and it was he who led many national republics on March 31, 1992 to sign the federal agreements.” One of the greatest achievements of the first president, Mr. Eremeev, called the signing in 1992 of an agreement on the delimitation of state property and the creation of Almazy Rossii-Sakha (ALROSA), which is still the largest taxpayer in the republic.
The second president of Yakutia, Vyacheslav Shtyrov, who in 1991-1994 was vice president and chairman of the government of the republic, called Mikhail Nikolaev a statesman of the Russian scale. “Mikhail Efimovich played a huge role as the head of the subject in signing the federal treaty. In 1992, for the first time, we formed the budget under completely new conditions, when the union center collapsed, when powers were redistributed. And I remember how Mikhail Efimovich told the members of the government that we must take care not only of our own problems, but also honestly fulfill our obligations to the federation, which is fundamentally important in order to preserve our Russian Federation at that time, ”— recalled Mr. Shtyrov.
Mikhail Nikolaev headed the Supreme Council of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1989-1991, and in December 1991 he was elected the first president of the republic and held this post until January 2002. In 2002–2010, he was a member of the Federation Council and deputy chairman of the upper chamber, and from 2011 to 2016, he was a State Duma deputy. After that, he served as state adviser to Yakutia. Mr. Nikolaev will be buried on August 8 in his native Yakut village of Oktyomtsy.
