In Warsaw, complained about the “knife in the back” from the European Union

The former Minister of Finance of Poland, Tadeusz Koszczynski, called the demands against his country from the EU a betrayal. In his opinion, the European Union at the height of the conflict in Ukraine plunged a “knife in the back” of Warsaw. The official spoke about this in an interview with the British newspaper The Daily Express.

Earlier, Poland turned to the EU for help due to financial problems after the coronavirus pandemic. In early summer, the European Commission agreed on a plan to restore the Polish economy and allocate more than 35 billion euros. But it was approved with a delay, while the EU made claims in the field of Warsaw’s compliance with European norms of the rule of law. Later, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned that Poland would receive money only after the implementation of the reforms that the European Commission insists on.

According to Kosczynski, Poland is going through a specific moment in history. Despite its own difficulties, Warsaw is helping Kyiv.

“Now is not the time to discuss whether the EU should give us money or not – it’s time to just give money. Let’s wait until the conflict is over and then go back to what the EU wants from Poland and what Poland can offer the EU,” Kosczynski concluded.
