Vologda Mayor Sergei Voropanov said that two streets of his city would be named after the commander of the Sparta battalion, Vladimir Zhoga, and Volgoda resident Igor Smirnov with the call sign Buba, who participated in the military operation in Ukraine as a volunteer.
“Today, there are also people who stand up for the weak, leading them into battle, to victory, sacrificing themselves. Therefore, we decided to perpetuate their names by naming the streets of Vologda in their honor,” Mr. Voropanov wrote in Telegram. The street near the viaduct in Vologda will be named after Vladimir Zhoga, the new street near Molodezhnaya Street will be named after Igor Smirnov.
Tanker Igor Smirnov led a unit near Izyum. He died in the fall of 2022. Vladimir Zhoga commanded the Sparta reconnaissance battalion in the DPR, he died in Volnovakha in March 2022. He was posthumously declared a Hero of Russia.
