The Ukrainian Tennis Federation commented on the handshake between Russian and Ukrainian tennis players
The Ukrainian Tennis Federation called the handshake between Ukrainian tennis player Elizaveta Kotlyar and Russian Vlada Mincheva after the match at the Australian Open Junior Championships an “unpleasant incident.”
The statement says that not holding handshakes with Russian athletes is the general position of Ukrainian athletes, and the federation supports it.
“Our leading players have been notified of this and support this position. But there can always be mistakes. This mistake happened to our player today,” the statement says.
The meeting between Kotlyar and Mincheva ended in victory for the Russian with a score of 6:2, 6:4. The father of Ukrainian tennis player Elizaveta Kotlyar, Konstantin, said that the handshake was a “mistake” and the athlete “regrets and assures that she will never allow anything like that again.” The man also attributed the incident to the fact that the Ukrainian woman was under pressure from the atmosphere at the stadium, since she was only 16 years old and did not have enough experience of performing at such competitions.
