Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Alexander Merezhko (“Servant of the People”) compared the new Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico with the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban.

This was preceded by Fico’s refusal to provide military assistance to Kyiv and support anti-Russian sanctions if they harm Slovakia.

Representative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Merezhko in comments Newsweek expressed dissatisfaction with the Slovak Prime Minister’s statements, calling him a possible “mini-Orban.” He noted that Slovakia is not a major supplier of aid to Ukraine, and expressed hope for a strong democratic opposition in the country that will not allow Fico to turn it into Hungary.

Fico stated that his government will not supply weapons to Ukraine and will only provide humanitarian and civilian assistance. It was stated at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on European affairs.

For a long time, Hungary was the only EU country that refused to sell weapons to Ukraine and opposed anti-Russian sanctions. In addition, Budapest prohibited the transit of weapons through its territory. Now the new Prime Minister of Slovakia is expressing a similar position that he stated after his appointment to this position earlier in the week
