The Azov brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (formerly the national battalion and regiment, recognized as terrorist in the Russian Federation and banned) has been restored and returned to the front, the National Guard of Ukraine said.
A statement from a department spokesman said the brigade is currently participating in battles northwest of Lysichansk.
According to local media, earlier, the commander of Azov, Radis (Denis Prokopenko), who returned from Turkey, was seen at the tactical exercises of the brigade.
Together with other commanders, Prokopenko was captured following the storming of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol in 2022 and, under the terms of the prisoner exchange agreement, was transferred to Turkey to stay in this country until the end of hostilities. As a result of the exchange, politician Viktor Medvedchuk was released from arrest in Kyiv, later seen in Crimea. However, in early July of this year, it became known that Prokopenko had returned to Ukraine, along with him returned Svyatoslav Palamar (Kalina), Sergey Volynsky (Volyn), Denis Shlega and Oleg Khomenko. In the Kremlin declaredthat Türkiye and Ukraine thereby violated the agreement with Russia.
