The announcement by Russia of the Day of Military Glory on September 3 as the Day of Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II will worsen relations between the peoples of the two countries, said Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet Hirokazu Matsuno.
“The adoption of the law can not only lead to inciting anti-Japanese sentiment among Russians, but also provoke anti-Russian sentiment among the citizens of our country, which is extremely regrettable,” he told reporters (quote according to TASS).
The Japanese Foreign Ministry expressed disagreement with the Russian side, voicing its position, he added.
June 24 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law, according to which the name of the memorable date was changed from “September 3 – Day of the end of World War II (1945)” to “September 3 – Day of Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II (1945)”.
This initiative was introduced back in June last year by a group of deputies headed by Andrei Kartapolov, chairman of the Duma Defense Committee, and senators headed by Grigory Karasin. Amendments are made to Art. 1 of the law “On the days of military glory and memorable dates in Russia”. On June 20 of this year, the bill was approved by the State Duma, and on June 21 – by the Federation Council.
