Around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is regularly shelled, it is necessary to establish a “silence regime”. This statement was made by a member of the main council of the military-civilian administration (MAC) of the Zaporozhye region Vladimir Rogov, transmits RIA Novosti agency.

“The UN leadership and the head of EU diplomacy should not declare about demilitarization, but about the introduction of a regime of silence,” Rogov said.

He also proposed imposing “severe sanctions” for violating such a regime. According to Rogov, these measures should “sober up” the Ukrainian authorities, who “blackmail and put the whole world under the threat of a nuclear catastrophe with their shelling.”

Earlier, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the demilitarization of the ZNPP would make it more vulnerable. According to him, such a decision could lead to new provocations and attacks.

On August 11, at the request of Russia, a meeting of the UN Security Council was held, at which the subject of shelling of the ZNPP was discussed. According to Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, at the meeting no one supported the Ukrainian version of what is happening around the station.

After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the parties repeatedly accused each other of strikes on the territory of the station and damage to the infrastructure of the nuclear power plant. On August 5, the CAA of the region announced another attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the ZNPP. As a result, two power lines and water pipes were damaged. The Russian Defense Ministry called Ukraine’s actions “nuclear terrorism”. Attacks continued on 7, 11 and 13 August.

The foreign ministers of the G7 countries, in turn, demanded that Russia “immediately” return the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to Ukrainian control. They expressed concern about the current situation, which “increases the risk of a nuclear accident and endangers the population of Ukraine and the entire world community.”

UN Secretary General António Guterres called the attacks on the Zaporizhzhya NPP a “suicidal act” and called for an end to them. He also expressed hope that the IAEA would gain access to the station. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said he plans to personally lead a mission to visit the power plant.
